Texas Reading Initiative
Student Success Initiative
The 76th Texas Legislature amended the Texas Education Code (TEC) Section 28.006 and approved the implementation of the Student Success Initiative. Two programs comprise the Student Success Initiative - the Teacher Reading Academies and the Accelerated Reading Instruction Program. The Initiative is to provide support for professional development of teachers and the implementation of scientific research-based reading programs to support students in their reading development.
The Student Success Initiative (SSI)is currently enforced for grades 3 and 5. All students in grade 3 and 5 must pass the Reading portion of the TAKS test in order to be promoted.
